The hospital was started by the government of Ghana in 1974 as a Health Centre to serve the Afram Plains, which at the time had no communication with other towns and villages.
On December 03, 1985, the facility was handed over to the Presbyterian Church of Ghana for effective management.
Currently, it is a 177 bed capacity facility, which serves as the District Hospital for both Kwahu Afram Plains North and Kwahu Afram Plains South Districts with a population of 123,941 and 139,836 respectively.
It is the main referral center for all the health centres in the entire Afram Plains.
The hospital provides a wide range of services including;
General Out-Patients Care, 24-hour emergency services, 24-hour In-Patients Care, Diagnostic Services including Laboratory, X-ray and Ultra sound services, General Surgeries, Obstetrics and Gynecology Services, Maternal and Child Services such as Antenatal, Deliveries, Postnatal and Child Welfare Clinics ( CWCs), Provision of HIV/AIDS Services such as Prevention of Mother-to-Child-Transmission ( PMTCT) Services and Anti-Retroviral Therapy, Health Promotion and Education on the Prevention of Diseases, Eye Care Services, Dental Care Services, ENT, Mental Health Services and Morgue Services.
The Presbyterian Hospital, Donkorkrom has been certified by the Ministry of Health of Ghana to operate and provide health care to the people of Ghana. It falls under the Christian Health Association of Ghana (CHAG). The facility has also been accredited to by the Ghana Medical and Dental Council (GMDC) to train house officers in the field of Obstetrics and Gynecology.
OTHER HEALTH FACILITIES AND PROGRAMS UNDER THE KWAHU AREA HEALTH SERVICE
The Area Health Service have in addition 3 health centres and 1 PHC program namely:

- Presbyterian Health Centre, Ekye
- Presbyterian Health Centre, Abetifi
- Presbyterian PHC, Donkorkrom.
